Sustainable Technologies degree programme is meant for individuals working with industrial research and development (R&D) activities or someone who is willing to work and develop in research-oriented work.
The content of education
The extent of studies is 60 credits and the duration of studies is 1,5-2 years. The degree consists of two 15 credits study modules and 30 credits thesis. The curriculum of the degree is presented in the study guide.
The contents of the programme are:
– Resource Wise Society and Industry, 15 credits (compulsory module, for the whole group)
– Specialisation in Sustainable Technologies, 15 credits (compulsory module, in the chosen research group) and
– Master’s Thesis, 30 credits.
The implementation of education
In the first autumn term, the study sessions requiring either a physical or virtual presence will be organised 1-3 times a month basing at Hämeenlinna campus and independent or group studies occur meanwhile. The dates of the contact days will be announced before the start of the studies.
The studies are meant mainly for students studying full time, but arrangements for students having a day job can be done. The studies will combine teacher-led study sessions, self-study assignments, group work, workshops and flipped classroom sessions. The assessment of the study sections is based on learning tasks, such as reflections, written assignments and tasks done at the contact sessions or exams.
The Resource Wise Society and Industry module will be studied in large group, but for the Specialisation in Sustainable Technologies module, the students will be divided into 4 groups according to the specialisation area they will choose. Some activities that are initiated in the Resource Wise Society and Industry module will continue during the rest of the studies. In the Specialisation in Sustainable Technologies module the students will be integrated to research groups who will be responsible for teaching of the small group of students. The thesis work will be carried out individually, but the students may be divided thematically depending on the number and type of thesis topics.
The teaching of the Resource Wise Society and Industry module will be organised as contact teaching at Hämeenlinna campus and online sessions. The contact teaching sessions in the Specialisation in Sustainable Technologies module will be organised on the campus where the relevant research infrastructure is located. The locations of the specialisation areas are:
- Sustainable materials science and engineering: Hämeenlinna
- Robotics and 3D technologies: Riihimäki
- Energy efficiency: Valkeakoski or Hämeenlinna
- Steel structures and metal: Hämeenlinna
Some intense periods of contact studies may be organised and the presence at the given research environment at the given time may be required during the last half of the studies, when the experimental part of the specialisation studies and thesis will be carried out, in case the thesis work will be done at HAMK Tech premises. In case the student works on a project containing no experimental work or the experimental work is carried out at their workplace or other location outside of HAMK Tech (Research Unit), physical presence at the campus may not be necessary. However, it is good to be aware of the possibility for occasional requirement of physical or virtual presence at your dedicated Research Group during the office hours.
